Brent Geese Land at Castle Espie Print

October marks the arrival of the Light-bellied Brent Geese at Castle Espie some 2 miles from Anna's House. Travelling from their breeding grounds in Arctic Canada a staggering 2,900 miles away, their journey takes them via Iceland, Greenland and over a mile high ice cap; one of the longest known migrations of any bird.

Almost all of the 30,000 strong population spends their winter months at Strangford Lough. An excellent place to see the birds is at Castle Espie Wetland Centre which provides a wide range of hides and nature walks that allow you to get close to the geese and a collection of endangered birds from around the world.
